My mother grew up being discouraged from all sports and didn't want that for me; I was lucky my parents encouraged me to play many sports -- although they steered me towards "feminine" sports. So I grew up being quite active and always loving sports, but didn't realize how important they were to me till I was older when I became aware that sports are integral to my identity.
